In this month’s Construction in Focus, we examine how leading employers in the industry are attracting and retaining the best and brightest. The answer, it seems, is more than simply money. Employees are drawn not only to the compensation and benefits a company can offer, but more importantly, to less quantifi-able elements such as openness and transparency, reputation, safety and security, and passion for the work. They want to be valued, to be heard, and to be part of a positive and supportive workplace culture. “Employees are drawn not only to the compensation and benefits a company can offer, but more importantly, to less quantifiable elements.”Culture, in fact, is a word we hear often from many of the leaders we speak with every day. And it comes up time and again in Margaret Eaton’s More than Money – Creating Workplaces that Work, in this issue. Margaret revisits those leaders’ stories, and discovers that the common thread tying them together is the desire to make workplaces that work for everyone.Jaime McKee EditorEDITORJaime McKeeDEPUTY EDITORTim Hocken COPY EDITORThora SmithCONTRIBUTING WRITERSCharline Cormier-Pellerin | Nate Hendley | Karen HawthorneMark Golombek | Robert Hoshowsky | Jen HockenStacey McCarthy | Margaret Eaton | Samita SarkarPauline Müller | Ryan Cartner | Jessica FerlainoREGIONAL MANAGER OF RESEARCHNate Selig | Ciaran DunneSENIOR CONTENT MANAGERSBrad Mike | Tom England | Peter SwaleCONTENT MANAGERSMehul Jagawat | James Corbett | Ashley MacDonaldPeter Swale | Ryan Shay | Christian Cooke | Simon LisowiecAlan Keogh | Matt Shay | Anthony Blazevic | Aaron ConwayMarc Boudreau | Melissa McIsaac | Evan BroussardSALES & MARKETING MANAGERLuke SimmsSALES TEAMPamela Taylor | Dean Lucas | Lucy Palmer | Kayla Brown Shawn Clarke | Joshuwa Amero | Sam DesjardinsPRODUCTION COORDINATORClaire ChambersGRAPHIC DESIGNERSEbic Tristary | Yoana Ilcheva | Gavin Billings Lindsay Bailey | Sarah Leeson | Nicole GalatisDIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTRobert ChambersPROJECT MANAGERJaimie FoxDIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONSColin O’NeillREGIONAL DIRECTOR, NORTH AMERICAAdam CameronOPERATIONS MANAGERJonathan FisherCONTROLLERJen HamiltonPUBLISHERJeff Hockenheating & cooling systemsProfessional hydronic components for outstanding system performance.Sinus North America stands for state of the art customized hydronic solution. The council has voted to proceed with a plebiscite to garner a sense of whether it is desired by the majority of residents. Bids are due January 11, 2019 and the decision is to be made on a location by September 11, 2019. The estimated cost is $5.23 billion, calculated in 2018 dollars. The estimated cost by 2026 will be closer to $5.99 billion, taking inflation into consideration, which is still less when compared to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games that were held in Vancouver, which had a price tag of $7.7 billion. The security budget alone is only $610 million compared to $900 million in 2010. The games will require a public investment of $3 billion from taxpayers at the local, provincial and federal levels. The remainder of the costs will be covered by ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, and contributions from the International Olympic Committee. In order to support the 2026 Winter Games, Calgary will have to add a new field house, which has long been a priority of the city, a mid-sized arena with seating for up to 6000 people. The city anticipates the use of eight different existing venues. Investments and upgrades will have to be made to McMahon Stadium, Scotiabank Saddledome, Olympic Oval, Canmore Nordic Centre, the sliding track, the ski hill at WinSport and the alpine hill at Nakiska which will not only put people to work but will also grow the province’s GDP and legacy infrastructure. MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT PLANNED FOR BALTIMORE’S PORT COVINGTON PROJECTPrimary developers on Baltimore’s Port Covington Redevelopment Project have announced the addition of a $5.5 billion mixed-use component for the project that will include apartments, a grocery store and office space. The project requires an architect to provide design services for the 250-unit apartment building that will have ground floor retail. The developers are looking for a design that melds an urban industrial feel with the city and the port’s history. It is intended to be a location that appeals to all Baltimore residents. The search is also on for a general contractor that will be responsible for constructing the project’s five buildings that will include 13 000 square feet of market space, 42 000 square feet of retail space and 180 000 square feet of office space. Developers are still in the permitting stage and working on over a billion dollars of infrastructure development before construction can commence. The market is likely to be the first thing constructed, with an anticipated ground breaking to take place in 2020. Canada Olympic ParkCalgary, Canada7INDUSTRY NEWSMICROSOFT TO ESTABLISH NEW TORONTO HQCHASE CENTER CONSTRUCTION COMING TO AN ENDA joint venture between Mortenson Construction and Clark Construction has topped off Chase Center in San Francisco, signalling that the project is close to the end of construction. Home to the Golden State Warriors, the $1 billion facility has been undergoing 10 months of structural steel work and is now in its 11-month push to completion. SME Steel Contractors started the project in November 2017 and fab-ricated and installed 10 600 tons of steel in the structure and 17 000 tons in the rest of the arena, including the attached mixed-use development. The project includes: an 18 000 seat arena, two 11-storey office buildings, 29 retail stores, more than three acres of public plazas, green space, and 1000-vehicle underground parking. The project is anticipated to be completed by August 2019 and will celebrate its grand opening in September 2019. The project required nearly 100 subcon-tractors and vendors working simultane-ously, as well as 1200 skilled tradespeople and other staff. Together, $2.3 million worth of work is being completed on a daily basis. The project was not able to fulfill the minority business hiring goal but met the good faith requirements in trying to secure minority labour for the project. Despite having an accelerated timeline, the injury and illness rate on the project has been lower than the national average. Microsoft Canada is investing greatly in its Canadian operations over the next four years, increasing staff, moderniz-ing its real estate assets and growing its Montreal research lab focused on artifi-cial intelligence, as well as establishing a new, state-of-the-art headquarters in Toronto across from Union Station, the city’s transit hub. Construction is underway at CIBC Square at 81 Bay Street, a project that has been undertaken by Ivanhoe, Cambridge and Hines. Occupancy is expected by September 2020. The company will have 132 000 square feet over four floors which will enable it to better serve its customers, attract top talent, and work with educational institutions, partners and tech startups in the city. Currently, Microsoft has 2300 Canadian employees, a number that could grow to 60 000 once the new headquarters opens and the rest of the Canadian investments have been made. The project will also require approximately 4 000 construction workers over the course of its development. The entire 2.9 million square foot complex will be home to CIBC’s headquarters and its 15 000 employees in the Greater Toronto Area, while the bank intends on leasing out 1.75 million square feet of office space in two of the connected buildings. The first tower is expected to be completed by 2020 with the second tower to be completed by 2023. 8INDUSTRY NEWSU.S. TO SPEND $10B ON MILITARY CONSTRUCTION IN 2019According to the Associated General Contractors of America, U.S. lawmakers have earmarked $10.3 billion for military con-struction projects, as part of its 2019 spending bill: Energy and Water, Legislative Branch and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act 2019.This will provide funding to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its Directorate of Civil Works, which can be used to fund harbour maintenance, lock, dam, levee, and environmental restoration projects, as well as Naval Facilities Engineering Command and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for hos-pitals, medical clinics and cemetery costs.
