Bringing to mind sporting events, concerts, and lazy summer days turning into nights, they serve as both community gathering places and economic drivers for the cities that call them home. Their construction is no mean feat; highly purposeful, stadiums must account for weather, lighting, acoustics, comfort, accessibility, sightlines, and integrated building systems of all sorts. But the results can absolutely be worth it.A well-designed stadium can form an iconic and timeless part of a city’s skyline. Most Canadians are familiar with Toronto’s Rogers Centre, home of the Blue Jays and originally called the SkyDome, whose construction made headlines as a dome that brought the outdoors in through its retractable roof. London’s Wembley Stadium features the 440-foot-high Wembley Arch, which serves as both a striking London landmark and a struc-tural lynchpin, supporting over 75 percent of the entire roof load. And as any baseball fan will tell you, the unique charms of the ballpark – Fenway Park’s Green Monster, Kauffman Stadium’s iconic fountains, Minute Maid Park’s 50,000-pound locomotive that runs atop the left-field wall – can be (nearly) as big a draw as the team itself. In From Ancient History to Modern Marvels, Robert Hoshowsky looks at stadiums around the world, both the old and the new, and the challenges and rewards that come with their construction.Jaime McKee EditorEDITORJaime McKeeDEPUTY EDITORTim Hocken COPY EDITORSThora Smith | Allister HavercroftCONTRIBUTING WRITERSRobert Hoshowsky | David CaldwellPauline Müller | Karen Hawthorne | Anne Lindert-WentzellNate Hendley | Margaret Eaton | William YoungCharline Cormier-Pellerin | Jen HockenJesse Doehler-Knox | Stacey McCarthyREGIONAL MANAGER OF RESEARCHCiaran DunneSENIOR CONTENT MANAGERSBrad Mike | Tom England | Peter SwaleCONTENT MANAGERSMehul Jagawat | Rosie WalkerErin Wells | Dale Connolly | Rose ScovilleWhitney McCoy | Scott Forbes | Wendy Hood-MorrisZoe Lenzie-Smith | Obed San Jose | James CorbettChristian Cooke | Darragh GilliganSALES & MARKETING MANAGERLuke SimmsSALES TEAMPamela Taylor | Kayla Brown | Joshuwa AmeroEvan Broussard | Jason MerriottPRODUCTION COORDINATORChantal De BrouwerGRAPHIC DESIGNERSEbic Tristary | Yoana Ilcheva | Gavin Billings Lindsay Bailey | Victoria Lane | Severina GachparovaDIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTRobert ChambersTALENT ACQUISITION MANAGERMelissa PikePROJECT MANAGERJaimie FoxDIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONSColin O’NeillREGIONAL DIRECTOR, NORTH AMERICAAdam CameronOPERATIONS MANAGERJonathan FisherCONTROLLERJen HamiltonPUBLISHERJeff HockenLighting Up the City One Building at a TimeCity Light Electric primarily focuses on new multi unit residential commercial complexes, but our electrical services extend to all types of residential and commercial electrical needs. To date, nearly ninety percent of the carbon tax imposed by Ottawa in April has been rebated to participatory provinces. As such, money is being earmarked to support backstop provinces with the remaining ten percent. Of the so-called Backstop Provinces that chose to bypass the carbon tax, New Brunswick will receive $2 million, Manitoba will receive $5 million, Saskatchewan will receive $12 million and Ontario will receive $41 million. Alberta also scrapped the carbon tax but will not be considered a Backstop until the move comes into effect in 2020. SIDEWALK LABS UNVEILS PLANS FOR TORONTO WATERFRONT NEIGHBOURHOODSidewalk Labs, sister firm of Google under the ownership of parent company Alphabet Inc. has released its master plan for its smart city neighbourhood along the waterfront in Toronto, Ontario. The Master Innovation and Development Plan, a 1,524-page draft, was presented to Waterfront Toronto, the tri-govern-ment agency that has partnered with the firm on the project. The $1.3 billion plan will be located on a twelve-acre plot of land called Quayside features residential units, heated side-walks, and roads that light up and are synced with traffic flow and obstacles. There are also approximately 190 acres beyond the initial plot of land that will include a new Google Canada headquarters and an urban innovation campus for startups. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions by ninety percent by removing concrete roads and replacing them with remov-able roadway tiles that include a lighting system. As the plan includes video cameras and sensors to collect relevant real-time data that will be used to optimize urban life and make it more efficient, there is a challenge related to issues of consent. The project will be monitored by an independent trust, but issues related to privacy could cause a delay, as it requires the approval of Waterfront Toronto and the various levels of gov-ernment to proceed. Public consultations are to be held. Larco once again has the go-ahead to build a seven-story, 147-room contemporary addition to the north side of the building. Its minor variance application will go before the adjustment committee in September and a National Capital Commission Board in November related to federal land use approvals, unre-lated to the design, in order to get a building permit. Excavation and utility work is slated to start later this year and construction is expected to last three and a half to four years. Though Larco emerged from this battle a victor, there are more challenges ahead for the project as public criticism continues to roll in.NEW YORK APPROVES HISTORIC GREEN NEW DEALNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed the state’s green new deal, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which is being called the single largest U.S. renewables procurement in the country’s history, exceeding the 1.1-gigawatt effort recently approved by New Jersey. Governor Cuomo approved a 1.7-gigawatt offshore wind deal with Denmark’s Ørstead and Norway’s Equinor, offshore wind developers that will build huge projects to support Long Island and New York City’s power supply. The deal includes millions of dollars in additional investments in port and infrastructure upgrades that will be necessary for these efforts. Ørstead and its utility partner Eversource Energy will be respon-sible for the 880-megawatt Sunrise wind project that will supply Long Island and Equinor will operate the 816-megawatt Empire wind project that will supply New York City. Parties will begin to negotiate long-term contracts and both projects are expected to be complete by 2024. The act looks to reduce reliance on renewables by seventy percent by 2030, as well as a complete decarbonization of the state’s electricity system by 2040 and the near elimination of carbon from the state’s economy by 2050. The report forecasts continued growth, particularly increased investment in autonomous construction equipment, 3D printing and bricklaying robots during the 2019 to 2025 period, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over twenty percent, expected to reach $190 million by 2025. The North American market is dominating, followed by Europe. Cartesian or delta robots are driving the growth, specifically demolition robots and autonomous construction vehicles, with leaders like Komatsu, Caterpillar and Volvo leading the charge. TRANS MOUNTAIN PIPELINE SPURRING DEVELOPMENT IN EDMONTONAccording to a CBRE report, the real estate market has stabi-lized in the Edmonton area for the most part, especially after the National Energy Board granted the project approval for the stalled portion of the project spanning from Edmonton to Vancouver, which has, at the very least, triggered demand for warehouse space in the city. The report indicates an increased interest in constructing warehouse space on the part of Edmonton Developers. Currently, there are 1.9 million square feet of industrial product being built in the city and more on the way as they anticipate growth in jobs and demand for space as the pipeline is under construction.9Next >
