In this issue we are pleased to explore inno-vative structures and the companies who’ve made them a reality. From pio-neering builders using tradi-tional materials in new ways to purposeful structures where design and functionality meet, we’re excited to delve deeper into the whys and hows of building. The CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia “exemplifies the importance of building design that incorporates both aesthet-ics and purpose,” writes Jessica Ferlaino in this issue’s Aesthetics, Functionality and Purpose. A campus-style collection of buildings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Roybal Campus boasts dedicated structures which include state-of-the-art laboratories, offices, a leading edge employee health and wellness centre, and much more. It also includes a building in need – of replacement, perhaps, as a new build might be safer than attempting to upgrade a structure neces-sitating such features as biosecurity level 4, 3 and 2 enhanced laboratories, HEPA filters, chemical showers and other key con-tainment and safety systems. The interesting – and troubling – thing is that the building in question should not be in need of replacement yet. While the facility was designed and purpose-built to the highest of standards, “something that was not considered was that the building would be in operation at all times,” writes Jessica, and now it is encountering problems which could compromise health and safety. A new build may be on the horizon, and it will be interesting to see what steps are taken to avoid history’s repeating itself.Jaime McKee EditorSuite 300, 7071 Bayers Rd. | Halifax, NS | B3L 2C2 | CanadaP: 1-647-479-2163 | E: info@fmgpublishing.comEDITORJaime McKeeDEPUTY EDITORTim HockenDIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTRobert ChambersDIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONSColin O’NeillREGIONAL MANAGERSAdam Cameron | Ciaran DunneMANAGER OF TRAINING & DEVELOPMENTNate SeligRESEARCH MANAGERS Mehul Jagawat | Afrah El Hack | Simon LisowiecMelissa McIsaac | Brad Mike | Peter SwaleSam Desjardins | Aaron Conway | Alan KeoghIvan Crnogorac | Sasha Morozova | Matt ShayDes O’Reilly | Ashley MacDonaldPRODUCTION COORDINATORClaire ChambersGRAPHIC DESIGNERSEbic Tristary | Yoana Ilcheva | Gavin BillingsLindsay Bailey | Sarah Leeson | Nicole GalatisOPERATIONS MANAGERJonathan FisherCONTRIBUTING EDITORJessica FerlainoCONTRIBUTING WRITERSRyan Cartner | Margaret Eaton | Robert HoshowskyNate Hendley | Mark Golombek | Pauline MüllerJen Hocken | Samita Sarkar | Charline Cormier-PellerinLaura McHargue | Stacey McCarthyAnne Lindert-WentzellCOPY EDITORThora SmithSALES & MARKETINGPamela Taylor | Luke Simms | Lucy PalmerKayla Brown | Dean Lucas | Shawn ClarkeCONTROLLERJen HamiltonPUBLISHERJeff Hocken FX Concrete ad 2.indd 14/24/17 4:47 PM3 INSIDE MAY Architecture & EngineeringGeneral Construction & ContractingMechanical, Electrical, & HVAC Focus on: Tilt-Up 4 COVER STORY 10AESTHETICS, FUNCTIONALITY AND PURPOSEThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia is a perfect example of how a building can be designed and constructed to play a vital role in the health and well-being of society. The CDC is the leading public health institution in the United States. Its location was chosen for its proximity to the malaria outbreak that was affecting the southern United States in 1947, but it has evolved with the needs and priorities of the nation.CONTENTSSpecialtyConstruction ServicesMaterials & Products 5 Are you planning an event relating to North America’s growing Construction Industry? To get your event listed in Construction in Focus, please contact us at least six to eight weeks before the event takes place or call 1-647-479-2163NPE 2018: THE PLASTICS SHOW7 – 11 May, Orlando, FLCovering the latest advances in plastics for construction, NPE 2018 posits that next-generation plastics will play a huge role in the coming years. Multiple Echo microphones are being installed in new homes, alongside Alexa, which features controlled lighting, thermostats, and digital door locks that are automated to allow Amazon deliveries to access the home when residents who are Amazon Prime members are not available. With the increase in concern and controversy surrounding corporate surveillance and the implications this will have on privacy, the choice to include Alexa could lead to a new source of data collection that will help Amazon better understand people’s behaviors and patterns. In turn, this data could be used to leverage additional sales. Alexa does have competition in the market, chiefly Apple’s HomeKit, which is touted as being a far more advanced platform in terms of security. HomeKit offers the same level of automation but more security versus the open-ended alternative. HomeKit is currently being installed by Brookfield Homes, KB, R&F, and WeberHaus in new con-struction projects. LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER TO UNDERGO $860M EXPANSIONThe Board of Directors of Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) unveiled their plans for an $860 million expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The investment will see the facility modernized, as well as the addition of 1.4 million square feet of space, including 600 000 square feet of new and leasable exhibit space. The investment will support the growth of tourism in the city, an industry that brings in $70 billion locally each year. The project is anticipated to create 14 000 construction jobs and 7 800 permanent jobs upon completion. Phase two of the expansion project is expected to be complete in time for the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), with phase three slated for completion two years later. seewhatmitchsee / Shutterstock.comAneese / Shutterstock.com7 INDUSTRY NEWSNORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST PASSIVE HOUSE DEVELOPMENT IS COMPLETEHillcrest Residences, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has become the largest Passive House certified structure of its kind in North America in terms of square feet and number of units. The new senior housing complex was developed by The Community Builders (TCB) and comprises 66 energy-efficient apartments as well as commercial space in Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighbourhood. TCB is a leading non-profit developer of afford-able and mixed-income housing that owns and manages over 400 housing units in Pittsburgh. Passive House is a voluntary program built on rigorous energy effi-ciency standards that minimize a building’s ecological footprint. By focussing on standards of energy efficiency, building operators can reduce not only ecological impact, but also operating costs related to heating and cooling. Hillcrest Residences was constructed to be airtight and well-insu-lated and features highly efficient heat pumps in combination with energy recovery ventilation units, as well as triple glazed windows. This allows the building temperature to remain regulated for residents despite extreme weather and keeps the building quiet despite its location on a main street. KOMATSU MOVES NORTH AMERICAN HEADQUARTERSHeavy equipment manufacturer and supplier Komatsu America Corp. is relo-cating its headquarters from Rolling Meadows, Illinois to Chicago, Illinois, a process that is expected to take until 2020.The new site is located at Triangle Plaza and is designed in the interest of cus-tomer-first solutions and services. The open concept, collaborative work spaces are designed to promote cross-discipline team communication. On-site amenities will include covered parking, proximity to health clubs, hotels and restaurants, access to major highways and public transportation including O’Hare International Airport, and access to the talent pool in the Greater Chicago Area. 8 INDUSTRY NEWSNEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR ONE STEP CLOSER TO UNDERWATER RAIL LINKCANNABIS R&D FACILITY COMING TO NORTH AMERICAA partnership has been established between Canadian cannabis producer Flowr and Hawthorne Gardening Company, a subsidiary of Scotts Miracle-Gro, and together they will build North America’s first cannabis research and development facility. The 50 000 square foot facility will be built in Kelowna, British Columbia and will include labs, greenhouses and genetic breeding space. Construction is set to begin this year with completion expected by 2019. Scientific collaboration will focus on nutrient formulations, environmental systems, lighting, irrigation, and integrated cultivating systems and will draw on the deep expertise of the partners who will develop cultivars that are ideal for various growing conditions and medical or therapeutic uses. The idea of an underwater rail link con-necting Newfoundland and Labrador has long been discussed and the dream is one step closer to becoming a reality. A pre-feasibility study that was announced in 2016 has been completed by consult-ing group Hatch and the Harris Centre at Memorial University and the recommen-dations are positive. The results of the $266 000 pre-feasibil-ity study show that a fixed link tunnel connecting Yankee Point to Point Amour is a recommended course of action. The project is estimated to take approximately 15 years to complete. Recommendations include a single tunnel design that would span 16 kilometres.Given the singular design of the tunnel, a single shuttle train would make trips back and forth between the two points with the capacity to transport upwards of 400 vehicles at peak hours. The tunnel system would replace the Strait of Belle Isle ferry service and would impact 60 percent of the traffic from the Cabot Strait ferry service. The project is expected to cost $16.5 billion and could have a significant nation building effect that has been described as being comparable to infrastructure projects such as Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The next stage of the project is a formal feasibility study that could cost up to $23 million to facilitate. 9 Next >
