EDITOR’S CORNERIn the construction industry, the concept of a multi-use space is one which sees traction in many different sectors. We see mixed-use residential/commercial buildings; shopping malls with offices and hotels on site; entire neighbourhoods that integrate cultural, entertain-ment, residential and commercial activity; and the blending of indoor and outdoor space with the use of pedestrian-friendly plazas and attractive and appropriate façades. Certain build-ings themselves also serve multiple functions – sport and entertainment complexes, art galleries, theatres – which we’re excited to highlight in this issue. In Margaret Eaton’s piece, the author takes a closer look at an art installation that frames the construction site itself as a kind of artist’s studio. Artist Leah Garnett’s When One Space Meets Another is a unique installation that Margaret terms, “a thought-provoking and complex exploration of space, which at the same time is delightfully ingenious and playful.” The installation harkens back to the artist’s childhood in both the woods of rural Maine and the construction sites on which her father worked, exploring the relationship between landscape, art and architecture.“The concept of a multi-use space is one which sees traction in many different sectors…”Also in this issue, Nick Parker takes a closer look at a true American icon of both architecture and sport – Boston’s Fenway Park, the home of this year’s World Series champions, the Boston Red Sox. In Homers, Hot Dogs and History, Nick explores the ballpark’s architectural history, its unique con-struction features, and the iconic place it holds in the hearts of Bostonians and baseball fans everywhere.Jaime McKee EditorEDITORJaime McKeeDEPUTY EDITORTim Hocken COPY EDITORThora SmithCONTRIBUTING WRITERSJessica Ferlaino | Stacey McCarthy | Robert HoshowskyJosh Carmody | Mark Golombek | Nate Hendley Pauline Müller | Jen Hocken | Samita SarkarNicholas Parker | Anne Lindert-Wentzell | Karen Hawthorne William Young | Margaret Eaton | Ryan CartnerREGIONAL MANAGER OF RESEARCHNate Selig | Ciaran DunneSENIOR CONTENT MANAGERSBrad Mike | Tom England | Peter SwaleCONTENT MANAGERSMehul Jagawat | Melissa McIsaac | Whitney McCoyVictoria Lane | Evan Broussard | Des O’ReillyScott Forbes | Ryan Shay | Afrah El HackChristian Cooke | Anthony Blazevic | Aaron ConwaySALES & MARKETING MANAGERLuke SimmsSALES TEAMPamela Taylor | Dean Lucas | Kayla Brown Shawn Clarke | Joshuwa Amero | Sam DesjardinsPRODUCTION COORDINATORClaire ChambersGRAPHIC DESIGNERSEbic Tristary | Yoana Ilcheva | Gavin Billings Lindsay Bailey | Sarah Leeson | Nicole GalatisDIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTRobert ChambersPROJECT MANAGERJaimie FoxDIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONSColin O’NeillREGIONAL DIRECTOR, NORTH AMERICAAdam CameronOPERATIONS MANAGERJonathan FisherCONTROLLERJen HamiltonPUBLISHERJeff HockenWe’ve been the innovative leader in ground control for the mining industry for more than forty years. Similarly, record numbers of nuclear power plants are also shutting down as plants enter the end of their life cycle. Considering how expensive it can be for a power plant to fully decommission, this two-day workshop is designed to educate mid-size and smaller power plant companies on new and alternative forms of plant decommissioning and remediation. It will also discuss potential new federal and state regulations, and the benefits of utilizing third party contractors as a more cost-effective DDD measure. For more information INDUSTRY EVENTS6INDUSTRY NEWSKITIMAT LNG PLAN GETS GO-AHEADNow that final investment decisions have been made, a massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, located in the traditional Haisla Nation territory, has received approval and construction will proceed immediately on the $40 billion mega project that will export LNG to Asia. The LNG Canada partnership consists of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Malaysia’s Petronas, Mitsubishi Corporation, Petro China Co. and Korea Gas Corporation. The pipeline will carry natural gas from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to the new processing plant in Kitimat where it can be liquefied and shipped overseas. As the project has already received the necessary environmen-tal, governmental and community approvals, construction will be underway in no time. The project is expected to employ 10 000 people during construction and 950 people full time upon completion. The British Columbia Ministries of Finance and Energy estimate that the project will generate upwards of $22 billion in direct government revenue over the next four decades. COLLAPSED BRIDGE IN SASKATCHEWAN NEVER UNDERWENT GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION The Dyck Memorial Bridge in the rural municipality of Clayton, Saskatchewan, located about 300 kilometers east of Saskatoon, underwent $325 000 worth of work and collapsed six hours after opening. It was built without a geotechnical investigation of the riverbed beneath the bridge. A section of the bridge collapsed when five underwater pilings sunk into the riverbed. The project proceeded with a tight budget so it is unknown whether an investigation was deemed too costly, or unnecessary, as only 1000 cars cross the bridge annually. The construction company will rebuild the bridge at no cost (and likely with a geotechnical investigation). 7INDUSTRY NEWSAMAZON INVESTS IN HOMEBUILDERFor the first time, Amazon has invested in a homebuilder, backing a start-up focused on prefabricated houses. Alexa Fund invested in Plant Prefab, a Southern California-based company that builds prefabricated custom single and multi-family homes using sus-tainable materials and construction processes. This is the latest in Amazon’s investments in smart homes and smart devices, though it is its first foray into home construc-tion. It makes sense, however, that it would invest in a company committed to the construction of sustainable and connected homes. The smart home market is expected to grow into a $53 billion industry by 2022 according to Zion Market Research and Amazon, through investments in Alexa Fund and Plant Prefab, is getting ahead of that action. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING NAMED FOR WOMAN PIONEERThe newly named Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University is the first engineer-ing school in Canada to be named after a woman, and one of only a few worldwide. Gina Parvaneh Cody has been a trailblazer in the industry since she moved to Canada from Iran in 1979 in pursuit of an educa-tion. She became the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in building engineering from the school and she was also one of the first women to serve as a machine inspector responsible for some of Toronto’s largest cranes. The announcement comes on the heels of a $15 million donation made by Cody, who is two years retired from a dec-orated career, to the engineering faculty to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, funds that were matched by the insti-tution. The funds will also support student success through scholarships, research on smart cities and the creation of three academic chairs. Women represent only 20 percent of engineering students in Canada, 23 percent at Concordia University last year. The sta-tistics are even more grim in the working world. The goal is to improve participation rates and remove barriers to entry for women by elevating mentors like Gina Cody and giving them these well-deserved honours. Concordia UniversityBakerJarvis / Shutterstock.com8INDUSTRY NEWSGORDIE HOWE BRIDGE PRICE TAG: $5.7BAfter numerous barriers to its progress, construction on the six-lane, 2.5 kilometer cable-stayed Gordie Howe bridge project begins this fall and is expected to last six years, with the bridge open to traffic by the end of 2024. It has an expected lifespan of 125 years. Construction of the bridge is expected to come with a price tag of $5.7 billion.A private construction consortium has been announced and the budget for the project is $3.8 million for the design and build component and $1.9 billion to operate and maintain the bridge and the ports of entry on both sides for thirty years, which will be some of the largest North Americans have ever seen. Gordie Howe Bridge is Canada’s busiest land crossing and serves as an important linkage between Interstate 75 and Highway 401, connecting Windsor and Detroit, Canada and the United States. Each year one-quarter of all goods traded annually between the two countries pass through this corridor. The project is named for a Canadian hockey great and a player who certainly made his mark playing for the Detroit Red Wings. The bridge towers will be designed to look like a hockey stick taking a slap shot in tribute to Mr. Howe, otherwise affection-ately known as “Mr. Hockey.” EXPERIENCE THE BUILDINGS SHOW!Celebrating its 30th anniversary, The Buildings Show is a great opportunity to experience all that North America has to offer in terms of products and services, as well as educational and professional networking opportunities in the worlds of design, architecture, construction and real estate.
